The Preservation Society is a non-profit 501 (C) (3) historic preservation membership organization serving Baltimore's two oldest maritime communities-Federal Hill and Fell's Point. The Preservation Society was founded in 1967 to stop the proposed extension of I-95 across the Inner Harbor. Had the Preservation Society not been successful in its ten-year fight, the Highway would have demolished the Federal Hill and Fell's Point communities, leveled Federal Hill park and blocked the development of the Inner Harbor. To accomplish this, the Society led the effort to have both communities listed on the National Register of Historic Places, Fell's Point in 1969 (making it the second historic district in the United States to receive that honor) and Federal Hill a year later.
For more than a quarter of a century, the Preservation Society has worked to maintain the 18th and 19th century character of these historic neighborhoods by fostering the preservation and intelligent restoration of their historic structures. The Society operates, without cost to the city of Baltimore, the design review program mandated by the urban renewal legislation covering these two areas.
The Society continues to this day operating for charitable and educational purposes in the renewal and preservation of both Fell's Point and Federal Hill areas of particular historical and architectural significance for the benefit, education and appreciation of the general public.
Operating funds are raised through annual membership and annual giving programs in addition to special events such as house tours. However, the major portion of the operating funds for the Society are raised, with the assistance of over 400 volunteers, during the two-day annual Fell's Point Fun Festival which was attended by over 700,000 people from all parts of Maryland and neighboring states in 2002.

Since its opening in October 1999, it has been the starting point for thousands of tourists. The Fell's Point Visitor Center is open daily and an integral part of the Fell's Point Maritime Center Complex.
The Preservation Society is working to stabilize and restore these buildings that include the oldest school building in Baltimore City and the two oldest wooden houses in Baltimore City.
